Evaluating Drugs Apples vs Oranges?
Private drug plan formularies are challenged to find methods to compare similar drugs and establish their relative value. Value can be derived by assessing the benefit versus cost; however the value will vary significantly depending on what factors are included in the benefit and cost calculations. This session will explore the challenges, opportunities and best practices in evaluating efficacy and effectiveness when assessing drugs for private drug plan formularies.

Presenter:
Suzanne Lepage,
Private Health Plan Strategist (This session made possible by Amgen)

Emerging Approaches to Managing High Cost Drug Claimants
Managing the high cost of prescription drug claims is becoming an increasingly important issue for employers. As the prevalence of employees with tens of thousands of dollars in annual claims increases, employers are looking for ways to best balance the employee health needs and employer cost. Emerging approaches focus on better managing the employee's health and ongoing treatment, as well as ensuring the appropriate sources of payment (government, pharma manufacturer, COB) are co-ordinated. These initiatives seek to balance the sometimes conflicting objectives of maintaining benefit program sustainability and minimizing the financial burden on plan members. What are the new business models that the insurance industry is developing, and what do employers need to do to ensure this balance is met?

Presenter:
Tim Clarke, FSA FCIA National Health & Benefits Innovation Leader, Aon Hewitt Canadian Health & Benefits Consulting
