Energy management in the Toronto Central LHIN

Presenter: Nick Pairaudeau, Energy Coach, Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network

The Toronto Central LHIN is developing a first-of-its-kind energy management plan across all the hospitals in its jurisdiction. This session will look at case studies, successes and opportunities for positive change that can be applied in other areas and other healthcare facilties.

Recycling in the clinical environment:
A case study

Presenter: Ron Saporta, Director, Engineering and Plant Services, St. Michael’s Hospital

St Michael’s Hospital, a recent recipient of the Recycling Council of Ontario's Gold Level Award, will present a case study into recycling in the clinical environment. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach combined with a thorough awareness and communication plan, this has led to significant improvements in waste management and diversion within a clinical setting.

How the increasing technology investment in today’s healthcare facilities can be leveraged to create a more sustainable environment and have a direct impact on healthcare ― significantly reducing carbon emissions while improving the state of healthcare in Canada.

Risks and opportunities in greening healthcare

Presenter: Ed Rubinstein, Manager, Energy & Environment, University Health Network

An overview of the issues, approaches and opportunities surrounding environmental management in healthcare facilties, including potential financial benefits and some lessons learned in the real world.




1:30 – 2:15 p.m. Session 6:

Creating a green culture

Presenter: Mark Read, Energy Stewardship Specialist, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Healthcare, London

We would all love to have a culture of energy efficiency throughout the organization, with all of our employees engaged in our energy-saving effort. An effective staff engagement program saves your hospital money, enhances its corporate image, protects the environment and increases employee morale. This session will focus on the behaviour change strategies and programs that will drive this culture change. Understanding that many hospitals have the desire but not the means to change, the session will also offer a solution for creating and owning your own program without enduring the initial or ongoing investment that’s customarily required.

Roadmap to Conservation – Profiles of Success

Presenter: Ian Jarvis, President, Enerlife Consulting

The new conservation process developed through Greening Health Care* begins with benchmarking and target-setting, implements improvements, and verifies actual savings, creating a virtuous cycle of continuous improvement. This session will present the process and results, and report on the growing number of hospital success stories recording remarkable energy and water savings.

* Greening Health Care is a program of Toronto & Region Conservation, available to hospitals across Ontario. It provides regular workshops for facility directors supported by a powerful online energy performance management system.




3:15 – 4:00 p.m. Session 8:

Sunnybrook: In Search of Sustainability

Presenter: Beverley Townsend, Manager, Environmental Sustainability, and Rudy Amrein, Manager, Plant Operations, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Sunnybrook is committed not only to responding to health problems, but also to preventing future health risks. Hospitals are in a unique position to lead as they have the mandate to protect patient safety as well as a deep knowledge and understanding of the requirements for improved human health to help society move towards a sustainable environment. Through creating and developing leadership in sustainability education and awareness initiatives, we can showcase how change can positively affect the patients we serve and the community in which we live. This session will look at implementing an all-encompassing sustainability model and provide a case study on one aspect of sustainability: an energy and facility renewal program.
