- Engaging Employers in the Promotion of Workers' Health

Sponsored by: Ceridian/Green Shield Canada

Dr. Goetzel will offer evidence supporting the following points. A large proportion of diseases and disorders from which people suffer is preventable; modifiable health risk factors are precursors to many diseases, disorders, and premature death; many modifiable health risks are associated with increased health care costs within a short time window; modifiable health risks can be improved through effective health promotion programs; improvements in the health risk profile of a population can lead to reductions in health costs; well-designed programs can be cost/beneficial - they can save more money than they cost, thus producing a positive ROI. The session will present research arising from WHP and HPM efforts at large employers such as Citibank, Johnson & Johnson, Dow Chemical, and Procter and Gamble. Program impacts are assessed based on a number of critical success factors including improvements in health, reductions in medical expenditures, and enhanced worker productivity.

In 2003, Campbell Canada launched a comprehensive workplace Wellness program entitled Wellness Within. We have observed high participation and satisfaction rates among our workforce but, does it really make a difference to their health and is their an economic benefit? To fully evaluate the program we have embarked on an IRB approved research project "Heart to Heart" with the objective of evaluating the impact of this comprehensive worksite wellness inititiative on cardiovascular risk and health
in addition to health economic outcomes. We're almost half way through and have seen some interesting result which we'll share.
