As one of Canada’s most experienced and innovative group benefits providers, HBT has been designing and administering benefit plans, managing funds and developing unique disability management strategies and healthy workplace initiatives since 1979.

A not-for-profit health and welfare trust, HBT serves over 600 member organizations in the health care and community social services sectors in British Columbia and the Yukon, with combined assets and contributions of over $500 million.  Our members include acute care and long term care hospitals, community care and community social services agencies.  These range in size from groups of less than 50 employees to large regional health authorities with thousands of employees.

Working in partnership with members to help keep their employees informed, healthy, and productive, HBT provides self-insured benefits to approximately 75,000 employees across BC and the Yukon.  The majority of these employees are members of one of 20 labour unions who have collectively bargained group health and welfare benefits.

HBT’s team of seventy highly qualified professionals provides members with invaluable assistance and cost-effective expertise to help them make the right decisions for the health of their employees and their workplaces.  We deliver these services to our members through three core business service areas:

  • Plan Administration - design and implementation of benefits; member queries and explanation of benefits; plan communication materials; implementation of design changes from collective bargaining; and experienced, effective liaison amongst employers, unions and claims adjudicators/payors.
  • Trust Fund Finances and Investment Management - manage a combined portfolio of more than $500 million in assets; monitor investment performance of six external investment fund managers; maintain member enrolment data; set annual contribution rates and invoice members; and oversee financial management of more than $300 million fiscal cash flow.
  • Integrated Health and Disability Management - design innovative disability prevention and workplace wellness strategies; implement unique early intervention and return to work programs; deliver comprehensive, supportive and proactive rehabilitation services; develop effective management of medical and rehabilitation services; and help members adopt best practices for strategic chronic disease and population health management.
