Session 6: Evaluating Wellness Programs: How to Guarantee Failure
Despite much activity related to workplace wellness and disease management in Canada, at this time, there is little evidence in scientific literature to support these types of programs. Dr. Neil MacKinnon will discuss the importance of conducting a well-designed evaluation of your wellness program and describe the key elements to include, such as the economic, clinical and humanistic outcomes, which are necessary to satisfy the needs of various stakeholders and provide that much-needed scientific evidence.

Session 8: Cancer Control in the Workplace: A Corporate Standard
Cancer is a complex disease that is costly to manage and presents tremendous barriers to both workers and their employers. However, controlling it is possible and highly desirable for organizations seeking to be employers of choice and control their costs. Dr. Alain Sotto will examine the impact of cancer in the workplace and share best practices from the new Canada’s Corporate Roundtable on Cancer Control. One of their key initiatives is to develop a workplace cancer standard and strategy that will improve understanding of how to control cancer through improved prevention, screening, support and access.

In the case of Johnson & Johnson, their wellness program saves the company approximately $8.55 million annually, according to a Cornell University study. Dr. Fikry Isaac will discuss the delivery models used by Johnson & Johnson, their effectiveness and lessons learned as well as the company’s ongoing mission of creating a “global culture of health” for their employees.
